Jesus Manifesto: Restoring the Supremacy and Sovereignty of Jesus Christ
by Leonard Sweet & Frank Viola
Thomas Nelson; releases June 1, 2010
Heaven in history knows both Gene Edwards & Frank Viola have written encouraging words shared; and for the Friends (Quakers), despite historic divisions and filing ambiguous flight plans, pleasant and spiritual folks with passively uplifting things to say about Christ.
to note: at least one Quaker sect (denomination) has been known to infiltrate & annex Viola-inspired house/organic churches.
to the nano Manifesto:
“We hold these truths to be biblically-evident, that all people have fallen short of the glory of God, that they are endowed by their Creator with a Savior, who is Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ, our risen, rising, and reigning Lord. Jesus Christ is the subject, goal, and motivation of our faith and devotion.”
Do you hear the rushing sound of faith being vacuumed from the soul? How did Jesus move from “the author of our faith”, to “goal and motivation”?
“Jesus Christ came to show us how to be a new kind of human, a Jesus kind of human. He came to do what Adam failed to do. He is the firstborn of a new humanity.”
Switchfoot, 1999? No, this goes older still
Jesus coming to pick up where Adam failed: the sort of subtle and serious downgrade religious ideas are “faithful” to spill?! Though His Father has been “crystal clear” to how the Son is “the image of the invisible God, the Firstborn of every creature,” Humanism continues rapping on the window with a hand-written note: “it’s all about humanity.”
[Colossians 1; I Corinthians 15:45]
“Jesus Christ is alive. He lives. He lives His resurrection life in and through us -- members of His beloved bride -- the body of Christ on earth. Jesus is the Way. What is Christianity? It is Christ.”
Jesus Christ is firstly alive and seated at the right hand of the Father.
So, what is Christianity? “A monotheistic system of beliefs and practices based on the Old Testament and the teachings of Jesus as embodied in the New Testament” [Google defines]? Reconstitution for a philosophy, religion or ethic? Been there, done that!?
Where do we find “Christianity” in the New Testament writings? We won’t, if we’re honest about it. The disciples were first called Christians at Antioch (though not so much by friends), and named label counterfeits have run that way since, in their working to defined a class or caste called Christianity; while Christ has never lived as a blanket, construct, add-on, label or re-paint. Christ is not Christianity, as the moon is not cheese. It has so long been pagan, Christianity. How did we know this? Much rather
we are His heirs, disciples, followers, servants, ambassadors, co-rulers in Christ
Got Christianity? Then you’ve likely been sold a label, a baggage car, and a bill of goods.
“Jesus is the Life. What is the gospel? It is Christ. Jesus is the Truth. What is truth? It is Christ.”
Len & Frank, Jesus of Nazareth does not agree. Do you understand why? He came “speaking/preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom”; the message His Father gave Him, doing the things He saw the Father doing. Dear folks and faire Citizens, you know The King has a kingdom. The Good News is not merely that there is a King, but The King has come tending His kingdom. All the N.T. authors brought the good news of this Kingdom of His Beloved Son, so why should we imagine to slight Him of His everlasting domain or neglect to announce it with Him?
[Matthew 4 & 24]
“What is truth?” If you know Jesus, then you are made aware for how that twisted & Roman-styled query still does not merit an answer. We know simply and fully that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, the Life.
“The ‘Jesus of History’ cannot be separated from the ‘Christ of Faith.’ The Jesus who walked the shores of Galilee is the same person who indwells the church today. We declare Jesus to be the gravitational pull that brings everything together and gives them significance, reality, and meaning. Without Him, all things lose their value. Without Him, all things are but detached pieces floating around in space.”
And “may the Force be with you.”? Oh, but it all sounds so much as Paul from Colossians 1, “in Him all things hold together”! Well, yes, Colossians 1:15-20, when processed through a new age grinder and rolled with oats, will come out something like, “Jesus to be the gravitational pull that brings everything together and gives them significance, reality, and meaning. Without Him, all things lose their value. Without Him, all things are but detached pieces floating around in space.” However, “solid meat belongs to them who would be mature [in Christ], even those who by reason of use have their senses trained & working to discern both good and evil;” while making meatloaf of the faith is reserved for the unwise. The real “gravity pull” in such a mashed meandering is its propitious means to say little of nothing at all.
“We declare that God’s mission in the world is less the business of fixing things that have gone wrong in our lives and more the relentless pursuit of finding us in our brokenness and giving us Christ as sheer Gift.”
The Gift includes our reconciliation and restoration: an everything “fix” on the scale of whole life. In the transformation and power of His grace to overflowing, His own then can hardly walk by a broken situation without something being made right! He is still the Great Physician. Touch the hem of His garment.
[II Corinthians 5]
“We declare that God doesn’t give us ‘things’ - whether they be values, virtues, truths, or gifts. The Father gives us His Son - Jesus Christ - who is the embodiment of all spiritual values, virtues, truths, and gifts.”
Yet Paul writes, “He [Christ] gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers
” The Gift is the Giver, who gives good gifts according to His purpose. You and I don’t yet have all He has to give, brother, not even after experimenting with somebody else’s mysticism.
“We declare that only Jesus can transfix and transfigure the void at the heart of the church. God has chosen to vest all power, authority, and life in the living Christ. And God in Christ is only known fully in and through His church. God has no hands but our hands; no feet but our feet. If we are doing today what Jesus did then, we wouldn’t be doing what Jesus did in the past. We’d be doing what Jesus is doing today.”
The binding of God to a cooperative man is a notion to be had from the Deist’ lending library. Yes, we are to be His hands and feet, and more. But if not, there are more messengers in heaven than we can count, with more power& manifest than we can imagine; should we ever doubt His power to feed Elijah, slay millions, or bring the rocks to cry out -- today!
True friends, His Bride may be battered, disheveled, and misbehavin’, while there ain’t no void for Her heart. She’s been bought with a price and not her own, and She knows Him, and She knows Who paid her due. She who is forgiven much, loves much. Yet, even if she should forget, He remains faithful.
[II Timothy 2:13]
“We, therefore, members of the body of Christ, assembled in virtual space and real space, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the moral integrity of our intentions, do, in the name, and by the authority of the holy Scriptures, solemnly publish and declare, that we return to the absolute preeminence and sovereignty of Jesus-the triumphant, victorious, resurrected, ascended, enthroned, glorified, Lord of the universe and God’s All in All. And for the support of this Manifesto, with a firm reliance on God our Creator, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor in pursuit of our passion, our mission, and our very life - which is Christ Jesus, this world’s true Lord.
--Len Sweet and Frank Viola”
Huh? Didn’t we already give up our lives to the King? Who are these people who may then “mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor
and so, the Viola-Sweet-Friends “Jesus Manifesto” is becoming of another re-covenant suggestion for a vast hoard who foolishly exempt the New Covenant of Christ (especially the “flesh dying” part) as unacceptable, undoable, inadequate or overboard. Yes, book sales will bring Frank some spending money, while frankly our own sickly appetite and itching ear for the next wave of religious pabulum is apparently turning brother Viola (and many others) away from the Way of Christ (at least to print); not so unlike the steeple church pastor who first began running well, until the politic & position of pulpit cleverly takes him hostage?
