Passion and Affection study

The English words “sex” and “love” have aggregated meanings, inviting confusion.
Affection: (Good & Bad)

παθος [#3806] “Lustful desires/passions” that bring suffering.
{Colossians 3:5; I Thessalonians. 4:5} (All godless desires ripen toward this.)

θιλοστοργος [#5387] “Kindly/Brotherly affection” {Romans 12:10}

&νβσπ;ιμειρομενοι [#2442] “Affectionately desirous of” {I Thessalonians 2:8}

σπλαγχνον [#4698] “Bowels” Tender compassion. {Philippians 1:8; 2:1-3; Colossians 3:12; II Corinthians 6:11-13}

Love or Lust?

ηδονη [#2237] “pleasure”
{James 4:1-3} Seeking/Desire with wrong [self] motivations.

ασελγεια [#766] “absence of restraint; licentiousness; wantonness”
     {Mark 7:22; II Corinthians 12:21; Galatians 5:19; Ephesiansa 4:19} Sensuality; lustfulness.
     ορεξις [#3715] “reaching after” (especially with the mind)

{Romans 1:27; I Timothy 6:10} Seeking things of the world/flesh.

{I Timothy 3:1; Hebrews 11:16} Longing for a better place.
επιθυμια [#1939] “strong desire”

{Matthew 5:28; Romans 13:14; Galatians 5:16,24; Ephesians 2:3} Enticing desires of the Flesh/Mind.

{Luke 22:15; Philippians 1:23; I Thessalonians 2:17} A desire to be with you; share together.

αγαπαω [#25] “all for you” The very Love that is [of] God.
{John 13:34; 14:21; I Thessalonians 3:12} “An unselfish 'love', ready to serve.”

ϕιλεω [#5368] “tender affection” (of the heart)
Both loves appear in John 21:15-17 as αγαπας; αγαπας; ϕιλεις.

  Bad passion:
{Matthew 15:19; Mark 7:21} “Out of the heart come evil thoughts, μοιχειαι, πορνειαι…”
πορνευω [#4203] “illicit sexual intercourse, including adultery” (fornication)
The four abstentions {Acts 15:20,29; 21:25}: Idols; πορνειας; what's strangled; blood.
{I Corinthians 5:1} A man having his father's wife.
{I Corinthians 6:13,18} The body is not for fornication.
{II Corinthians 12:21; Galatians 5:19-21; Ephesians 5:3; Colossians 3:5} “Impurity, fornication & lustfulness.”
{I Thessalonians 4:3-5} “…not in passion of lust.”
{I Corinthians 7:2} A latent consideration favoring marriage.
{Matthew 5:32; 19:9} πορνεια as a probable cause to “put away” a wife.
{I Corinthians 5:9-11; 6:9-11; Ephesians 5:5} Not to associate with these. No Kingdom inheritance.
μοιχεια [#3430] “Unlawful intercourse with the spouse of another”
{Hebrews 13:4; II Peter 2:14} “Adultery”
ακαθαρτοσ [#167] “Uncleanness; Impurity”
{Romans 1:24-30} (as relating to acts in homosexuality and other πορνευω depravities.)

   Of Law & Liberty, Faith & Love:
{Galatians 3:24-25; I Timothy 1:9-10} Law is for the lawless (unruly; needing a tutor).
{Romans 7} Sin takes opportunity through the law. (i.e., Max Speed 55 mph]
{Colossians 2:20-23} This is why a “morality” (social code) leads to an occasion for sin.
The New Covenant mandates a better way for us:
     * The Law of Faith {Romans 3:27-28; Galatians 2:18-21}
     “…He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” {Hebrews 11:6}
     “…God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.” {Romans 12:3; 14:23}
     * The Law of Liberty {James 1:25; 2:12; Romans 14}
“All things are lawful for me, but not all things…” {I Corinthians 6:12; 10:23}
       “…are helpful; expedient; profitable, edify, build up”.
     * The Law of Christ {Matthew 22:36-40; I Corinthians 9:21; Galatians 6:2}
     “…that you love one another.” {John 15:12-13; I Peter 4:8-10}
     “…love is the fulfillment of the law.” {Romans 13:9-10; I John 4:16-21}

     The Flesh, the World & the Devil:
No longer obliged to live according to the flesh. {Romans 8:5-14; Galatians 5:19-21}
No longer bound to live by “all that is in the world”. {I John 2:16}
No longer under peril to grovel in “the works of the devil.” {I John 3:8}

     Our Desire:
Consider first the Kingdom of God. {Matthew 6:33; Colossians 3:1-3}
Consider ourselves dead to πορνειαι, ακαθαρσιαν, παθος, evil επιθυμιαν… {Colossians 3:5}
Considering only the interests of others. {Romams 12:9-13; 15:2; I Corinthians 10:24; Philippians 2:1-4}
Shun hypocrisy and “double-mindedness”. {Matthew 12:35-37; James 1:6-8; I John 4:20}

     What About…
αγνεια [#47] “Cleanliness or Purity” Chaste.
{I Timothy 5:2} Older as mothers, younger as sisters, in all αγνεια.
κοιτη [#2845] “Bed or Couch” {Luke 11:7}
{Romans 9:10; Hebrews 13:4} Within context, may refer to sexual intercourse or conception.
{Rom. 13:13} κοιταις with ασελγειαις [see above].
απτομαι [#680] “Touch” To fasten to.
{I Corinthians 7:1} “…not to touch a woman.” (Context: To marry or not to marry.)
εγκρατεια [#1466] “Self-control” {Galatians 5:22-23; Titus 1:8}
{II Peter 1:5-9} faith virtue knowledge εγκρατεια patience godliness ϕιλαδελϕια αγαπην
{I Corinthians 7:9} If you lack self-control, marry.
{I Corinthians 9:24-27} Exercise self-control in “running the race”.
